Pairing Emergency Severity Index5-level Triage Data with Computer Aided System Design to Improve Emergency Department Access and Throughput

چکیده
Patient waiting times and service quality problems characterize emergency departments worldwide. The purpose of this research is to develop a reliable decision support system using the Emergency Severity Index (ESI) triage method to drive improvements in the care delivery process, as part of a hospital Emergency Care Delivery System. Models were developed using first a relatively low fidelity software, ProcessModel, and then in Arena, a relatively high fidelity simulation software, to test new proposals for service delivery improvements in an academic ED in York Hospital, Pennsylvania, where the ESI triage system has been implemented. This paper pairs the case mix derived from ESI triage with simulation to support resource deployment to improve service metrics and support strategic decision making in academic EDs. The lessons learned could be re-analyzed in a simulation model more representative of a non-academic (regular hospital) ED that implements ESI five level triage.

Evaluating the accuracy of emergency nurses in correct triage using emergency severity index triage in Sina hospital of Tabriz: a cross-sectional analysis
Objective: Triage refers to the evaluation and categorization of patients for better management to deliver services. A good triage system should be able to accurately specify the patients who require urgent care. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of emergency nurses in correct triage using Emergency Severity Index (ESI) triage. Methods: In ...
متن کاملRe-engineering an American emergency department with Team Triage - adapting to increasing patient volume in emergency services
Introduction Overcrowding in U.S. emergency departments (ED) is a critical issue. In a privatized health care system, patients with limited access to insurance benefits (as influenced by challenging socio-economic conditions) often utilize the ED as crucial point of access to care. Non-acute patients seeking primary care in ED facilities can congest operations and contribute to overcrowding. In...
متن کاملNurse-Physician Agreement on Triage Category: A Reliability Analysis of Emergency Severity Index
Background and Objectives: MThe Emergency Severity Index (ESI) triage is commonly used in clinical settings to determine the patients’ emergency severity. However, the reliability of this index is not sufficiently explored. The present study examines the inter-rater reliability of ESI by comparing triage ratings as performed by nurses and physicians. Methods: This prospective cross-sectional st...

Background and Purpose: The emergency severity index (ESI) triage system has been recommended by the Ministry of Health to classify patients at emergency departments. This study aimed to assess the validity of ESI system (version 4) in the emergency department of a teaching hospital. Outcome measures were hospitalization, emergency department (ED) length of stay, resource consumption, in-hos...
